Classic Album Spotlight -- Running on Empty

Jackson Browne's fifth album, Running on Empty, released in 1977, is a live album, but remarkable in the fact that none of the tracks on the album had ever appeared on any studio album. Running on Empty (the song) has always been one I never get tired of. along with album closers The Load-Out and Stay.

In addition to songs recorded live in various venues, there are songs on Running on Empty that were recorded in hotel rooms and one that was recorded on the tour bus.

In addition to the tracks mentioned above, Running on Empty featured Rosie, The Road, You Love the Thunder, and Shaky Town. A lesser known but equally cool track included on the album is the song Nothing But Time, which is the song recorded on the tour bus (a Continental Silver Eagle). At one point while the band is jamming, you can actually hear the bus whining down the highway. The drummer played a snare, hi-hat, and used a cardboard box with a foot pedal.

Running on Empty received two Grammy Award nominations in 1979.

Classic Jackson Browne.
